John Culver Wilson

When he says he’s played thousands of gigs in bands, duos, and solo, he ain’t foolin’.

John has been playing guitar since he was a teenager and for money since he was nineteen. He began playing in Columbia, MO in the early 70’s in Straw Boss, and continued in the Lost Canyon Drifters and The Secondhand Band. He also played in various honky-tonk aggregations during this period (John: “I’m not afraid to name names, I just don’t remember”).

In 1982 John moved to Maui, Hawaii where he played in The Geckos, Whiskey Jones, The Sharks, and the seldom heard but much beloved Me and the Boys. While on Maui he recorded an album of original music (now reissued as “The Maui Years,” and available on most major music streaming platforms).

In 1989 John moved to St. Louis, MO. He played in several country bands, with a classic rock band (Third Degree); and then began playing in more blues-based bands (The Sportsmen, Drivin’ Wheel, The Soulard Blues Band, The NGK Band). John is currently doing solo gigs, as well as playing in two different duos: The So & Sos, (with Dan Frey playing a variety of instruments), and Two Dudes with Guitars (with Dominic Consolino on bass). John is also playing in two different electric trios: The Budget Blues Band and The So & Sos. Both bands feature Bud Rager on Drums. With Bud and Dan, he has released two original Christmas singles “Ride On, Santa!” and the child friendly “Santa in the House.” In 2023 John recorded an album of his songs with Bud, Dan, and Gian Vianello on harmonica titled John Culver Wilson with The So & So’s (available on most major streaming platforms).

The So and Sos

The So & Sos is two bands in one. They can play as a duo with John on guitar and vocals and Dan Frey on vocals and a myriad of instruments (see below). The So & Sos can also play as a rocking electric trio with John on guitar, Dan on bass, and the fabulous Bud Rager on drums. Both versions of the band play a wide variety of music including original tunes, rock, blues, country, reggae, and ? (their favorite genre). Think Dylan, Little Walter, Taj Mahal, etc.

Dan and John met when they were both teachers at Stix Early Childhood Center in the St. Louis Public Schools. They became friends and started playing music together for their own enjoyment. They formed the So & Sos in 2018. Dan is a talented musician who sings and plays guitar, bass, mandolin, octave mandolin, and harmonica. Bud Rager has been drumming around St. Louis for years, primarily with the Melissa Neels band, and teaches at Tower Music. That’s the electric trio version of the So & Sos with Bud playing drums on John’s Christmas tunes “Ride On, Santa”and “Santa in the House.” You can also hear Bud and Dan playing on the 2023 album “John Culver Wilson with The So& So’s’.” In addition to all the “usual” sorts of gigs (clubs, house parties, coffee houses, concerts, etc.) The So & Sos love to play kids’ parties. They’ll bring rhythm instruments for the kids and jam!

Two Dudes with Guitars

Two Dudes with Guitars is John and Dominic Consolino. Dominic plays bass and sings. The two met in 2005 when Dominic was putting a band together to back up the late Morris Henderson. St. Louis bluesman Bennie Smith named the band The Sportsmen. Around the same time, Dom and John also started playing as a duo. Dominic has played with the Melissa Neels band, David Dee and the Houserockers, and Big George Brock.

Two Dudes with Guitars also plays electric music with Bud Rager on drums; in this incarnation they are known as The Budget Blues Band (“Just ‘cause we’re cheap, doesn’t mean we’re easy”). Dominic and John have been playing in one form or another several times a year at the Villa Antonia Winery outside Pevely, MO.
